Michael Roberts - 22.03.2010

Minister of Infrastructure Milutin Mrkonjic and Ambassador of Sweden in Belgrade Krister Bringéus signed a Memorandum of cooperation Friday between the governments of the two countries in the field of railway transport.

Mrkonjic told a news conference after the signing that this document provides assistance to Serbian railways Zeleznice Srbije in new technologies, participation of Swedish experts in projects in Serbia and in forming a mixed Serbian-Swedish working group for cooperation.

He said that the Ministry of Infrastructure proposes cooperation in the purchase of freight wagons, electric and diesel passenger trains, modernisation of capacities for maintenance of vehicles, purchase of mechanisation and equipment for maintenance of infrastructure, and purchase of mobile manipulators for loading and unloading goods.

Serbia is also interested in cooperation in the construction of container terminals on Corridor 10, the purchase of new information technologies and cooperation in the digitalisation of the telecommunication network of Zeleznice Srbije with optical infrastructure.

He stressed that Serbia has good experiences in cooperation with Sweden and expressed the conviction that Zeleznice Srbije will greatly benefit from this Memorandum.

Bringéus said that the signing of this memorandum shows that Serbia is ready to expand cooperation with Sweden in order to modernise its railways. wedish companies are very interested in this memorandum, for instance Ericsson is interested in entering the area of signalling systems, he said.

Milovan Markovic, Director General of the Serbian railways Zeleznice Srbije , said that their plan is to reform the Serbian railways system to make it competitive at the European level, and that specific cooperation plans will be submitted to Swedish partners very soon.
