Balkans.com Correspondent in Tirana - 17.03.2010

The Director for Western Balkans in European Commission’s DG Enlargement, PrierreMirel has called on the Albanian political parties to reach consensus for thesolution of the political impasse before March 18, when the Albanian parliamentwill review the two legal initiatives of the Socialist Party, the localnewspaper Albanian Daily News reported.

“Theconsensus is essential for Albania, in order to show that is a maturedemocratic country,” Mirel said in Tirana during a joint conference withAlbanian European Integration Minister Majlinda Bregu.

Heconsidered the return of the opposition in the parliament as positive, emphasizingthat he was of the opinion that the political debates should be held in theparliament.

“Theestablishment of the investigative commission would be a solution that wouldlead to consensus to be reached on March 18, so when Stefan Fule, the new EUcommissioner for enlargement visits Tirana on March 19 finds a quieterpolitical situation,” Mirel added.

Referringto the process of the visa liberalization, Mirel said that the decision wouldbe taken within the first six months of 2010.

Albania’s main oppositionSocialist Party is requesting a parliamentary investigation on the election results of June 28, 2009 parliamentaryelections, pretending that the results were rigged.
