Tunnel on Albania-Kosovo road to reopen by May 15 following works

The southern Thirre tunnel in Kalimash, part of the newly built Durres-Kukes-Morine highway, will open to traffic by May 15, Deputy Transport and Public Works Minister Ernest Noka told the Albanian Telegraphic Agency.

The tunnel was closed in October last year for installation of equipment and stabilization of a short segment due to an unstable geological mass exerting pressure on the wall, according to the ministry (www.mpptt.gov.al).

The 170-kilometer Durres-Kukes-Morine highway, which opened to traffic in June, 2009 shortens the distance to Kosovo, increasing traffic especially in summer. It is the Balkan country's largest infrastructure project.
